Tuesday 10/15/24 – Ft Meyers

I woke up early this morning dreaming of fried chicken. When I looked at my watch I realized that it was 4:30am and I was a victim for the second night in a row of a crazy rooster crowing in the middle of the night!

I’m not totally sure of how and why there are so many chickens running loose on Key West…. But they are everywhere and the roosters can’t tell time! Two mornings in a row my sleep was rudely interrupted by the sounds of the roosters crowing somewhere near my hotel room. I did ask several locals and heard similar stories about the birds being imported onto the island to be used in cock fighting. Somehow they escaped and have been living wild and free ever since. I do know that they are beloved and protected by the locals.

Since I wasn’t able to get much rest after my close encounters with the resident fowl…… I got myself all packed up and decided to get an early start.

My destination was Ft Meyers, Fl. I will be spending a couple of nights visiting my former college roommate Al Brunk.

Before I got to Ft Meyers I had one stop to make. I stopped by to see my friend Sheryl Howell Hilburn in Naples, FL.

It was great to see Sheryl again. I was also able to meet her husband Ronnie for the first time. Beautiful home for a lovely couple.

I arrived at Al’s house just in time to head towards the beach for happy hour and some dinner. We were able to find a place that was open with a limited menu due to hurricane Milton!

It was an early evening. I was pretty tired so I crashed for the evening.
